Former President Donald Trump has named U.S. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate.
The Advocate has noted that Vance—a Trump critic-turned-ally—has an extensive anti-LGBTQ+ record.
Before Vance was sworn into office last year, he said he would have voted against the Respect for Marriage Act, which enmeshed marriage equality into federal law to protect it against future negative U.S. Supreme Court decisions. He also infamously said Democrats want to bring immigrants into the U.S. to turn them transgender. And in 2022, he tweeted, “I’ll stop calling people ‘groomers’ when they stop freaking out about bills that prevent the sexualization of my children.”
Vance also opposes gun control, calling gun violence “fake problems.” Recently, he also blamed the Biden campaign for the assassination attempt on Trump, posting, “The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”
Trump has his own record of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and actions. Windy City Times, citing The Hill, noted in May that he said he would roll back transgender student protections that the Biden administration enacted last month “on day one” of his presidency if he is re-elected in November.
