In a compelling tribute to the resilience of women, playwrights Victoria Rue and Martha Boesing, in collaboration with Luna Productions and the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA), present Voices from the Silenced, advocacy theatre visually re-imagined in film. The film brings to light the personal stories of women who had abortions before the Roe v. Wade ruling. This film is especially timely as the national debate on reproductive rights intensifies with the election.

Voices from the Silenced is a 57-minute film that offers a deeply human portrayal of women who faced the dangers of illegal abortions and societal stigma, including stories that are being told Rue and Boesing expertly weave these narratives, providing a stark reminder of the impact of restricted reproductive rights. The film combines drama and documentary elements to create a powerful call for reflection and dialogue on the ongoing fight for reproductive rights.

“Through Voices from the Silenced, we aim to honor the women whose stories have been overlooked for too long. By amplifying their voices, we hope to ignite empathy, understanding, and action in the ongoing fight for reproductive rights,” said Rue, film and play co-writer and director.

Boesing, co-writer/co-director, added, “Voices from the Silenced is a testament to the power of storytelling in effecting social change. By confronting the harsh realities of the past, we address the challenges of the present and future. This film is not just a reflection of history but a call-to-action for a more just and equitable society.”

“This film is not just a recounting of history but a stark warning of what’s at stake. It underscores the urgent need to protect reproductive rights and serves as a rallying cry for those who believe in women’s autonomy and dignity. We must not let history repeat itself,” Susan Hingle, MD, AMWA President.

“From the first plaintive note on the cello, to the last scene of women sporting the bright green scarves of the successful Argentine pro-choice campaign, the complex drama of abortion rights is brought into focus. Watch this version of the play “Voices: Our Stories Before Roe v. Wade” to get an inside look at the women whose stories educate a new generation of activists. The power is in the telling and in the refusal to accept life-threatening, soul-killing injustice. Brava!”  Mary E. Hunt, Ph.D. is a Catholic feminist theologian who is co-founder and co-director of the Women’s Alliance for Theology, Ethics and Ritual (WATER).

The 57 minute film “Voices from the Silenced” is available for free to be streamed or used as a fundraiser for local reproductive justice organizations.
